Shut up, I know what I'm doing.

So, I've recently been thinking of have the entire community pull together and make some kind of game. Late yesterday, I kind of solidified the idea with a plan for a flash game, a side scrolling shooter which I had thought up and had performed a little abortive work on last summer. If there is anyone who is skilled enough with Flash, voice acting, digital art etc, who is interested, just drop me a line.

So, here are the sprites, as promised, with little description blurbs.

T-39 Firebird:
The basic fighter of the USAF of the 2040s, the Firebird was developed as a low-cost successor to the expensive F-22 Raptor. It is a good, reliable aircraft, but is deficient in many of the features common in more advanced aircraft. It was relegated to Trainer status in 2046

F-39C Thunderbird (Navy):
A modified version of the Firebird which has been fitted to land on carriers. The Thunderbird has limited VTOL capabilities, making it an excellent dogfighter. However, firepower has been sacrificed for weight. It can only carry 4 missiles and is equipped with a single 20mm cannon.

F-39E Super Thunderbird:
Attempting to increase the service life of the F-39, a dozen squadrons of Thunderbirds were given mid-life upgrades. The new F-39E features improved VTOL abilities and a second 20mm cannon as well as enough space for 8 missiles. It is, however, a bit more fragile.

EF 2046 Freiheit:
With one of the best pedigrees in the world, the Freiheit is nonetheless a breakthrough in fighter technology. The EF 2046 boasts a "modular weapons system", allowing weapons pods to be swapped out to fit mission parameters, anything from dogfighting to delivering nuclear weapons. The Freiheit itself is quite an impressive fighter, armed, by default with a 37mm tankbuster cannon and a rack of 12 heatseeking and radar guided missiles. The Freiheit is the most fragile of current generation fighters, but it's sleek design also provides it with a tiny head-on sillouhette.

USS William Travis (CVN 84)
Commissioned in 2031, the Travis is a Davy Crockett class Light Fleet Carrier (Nuclear). Designed following the humiliating defeat of the US Navy during the Spiderweb war, these ships are far lighter and faster than traditional carriers. Equipped with the shorter decks allowed by the development of VTOL technology, the Crocketts carry a complement of over 40 aircraft. Although they were designed to be compliments to the larger Ford class Fleet Carriers, they are quite capable of operating independently, projecting power over a larger area and in greater number than traditional supercarriers.

Very nice. I especially like the Firebird and Freiheit.

The only thing that draws a negative eye IMO is the bow of the William Travis. The curve of the overhanging part near the tip seems rough in some spots closer to the front, easily rectified by adding some transition pixels.

When we're preparing sprites for animation, anti-aliasing isn't really an option.

I like the Firebird best. I think the design works very well in a tiny sprite. Actually, unlike Zeth, I liked the Freiheit least out of the little planes. Not due to anything that's your fault, but at that size it's impossible to get a clean outline along such a long tapered nose.

I was referring to within the borders of the sprite. Surely manual anti-aliasing isn't a problem there.

Ah, you mean the bow flare, I'll see what I can do.

EDIT: I tried it, and it came out much worse than the original crisp outline.
