Settlers of Catan is a good game. It's not a war game, by any means, but it's an interesting blend of strategy and luck. Mainly strategy, but also diplomacy. It has many facets. |

I got to play Settlers of Catan at the ARC Christmas party last friday. It was tonnes of fun, especially the head-games you end up playing when you reach the endgame when its 5 in the morning, and there are only two possible victors in a six player game, both 1 VP from victory and both fighting over the "Longest Road" card. |

Yep. It gets pretty intense near the end, when you and another person are a couple VPs away from winning. One card could change it all. |

I actually tried to rush for all the Defenders of Catan cards, and pulled a "Reagan Administration Turn" as I called it, hoarding wheat, ore and sheep enough to deploy, activate and upgrade two strong knights and a normal knight in one turn. |

Oh, you played Knights of Catan. I haven't played that. Only Settlers, and the 5-7 player expansion. |

As long as we're talking board games here, I'd like to throw in vote for Pictionary. Not exactly a strategy game, but quite fun. It's become something we have to do at every so-called party we have. We're a real wild bunch of teenagers, we are. This one time we were playing 2 vs 3 and were tied at the very last move. The winner of the All-Play would be the winner of the game. The picture in question? Square. All our DND games, on the other hand, failed miserably, often with quite humorous results. One time we got about twenty minutes into a game before realizing that not only did no one really wanted to play, no one knew why we were there in the first place. Later that evening we conducted the worst snipe hunt in the history of snipe hunting. |

It was all Noah's fault, really. Immature little bugger. |

Not really, no. Immature little bugger though he may be, Noah only played with us maybe twice and he certainly wasn't the only thing that went wrong in either case. We stopped inviting him a long time ago and our DND games still fail horribly. Also, I don't think you're thinking of the same adventure I am. The only one you played with Noah was the Halloween game where we took two hours to run in a two-room cave, disarm one trap, grab a weed, and run back out. The game that concluded in the worst snipe hunt ever was back in May, and you weren't there. |

I remember the one on Halloween ending in a very bad snipe hunt. |

![]() Why must the poor snipe suffer for your D&D frustrations? Maybe you should ditch 3.5 for 4.0, seeing how it's simpler and whatnot. It might not be as deep, but your elf might complete his weed runs. |

Oh no, 3.5 is much, much better, and 4.0 wouldn't make our games work out any better. It's not the version, you see, it's the people we have to play with. If we had a better selection, then we could get something done. So I think we're sticking with 3.5. |

... Get OUT! No seriously, 4.0 isn't as suited for PC-NPC interaction and other non-combat stuff, it also makes each PC self-sufficient and makes combat easier, which pretty much negates any need for the players to actually co-operate. Needless to say, with a party like Mage's this is a BAD thing. |

And, like I said, switching to 4.0 wouldn't help, because the problem wasn't with the system. |
